Song of the Day: Can’t Live Without You by Charlie Wilson

When I’m writing I can’t live without…
1. Music or sometimes TV.
There are some writers that need complete silence, but I’m definitely not one of them. I need some kind of background noise like music or the TV.
2. The Internet.
Yes the Internet can be a distraction, but I actually use it to research something I’m writing, or to look up a word (I use on online dictionary or thesaurus.)
3. My Flash Drive.
I ALWAYS back my work up on a flash drive…or two. During NanoWriMo I was traumatized and I lost a huge chunk of my work because my computer fell and landed on the flash drive (while the flash dive was still plugged in.) I’ll never forget the feeling of seeing so much hard work go down the drain. These days I back up my work on two flash drives and I email myself. (Yes, I’m paranoid.)
4. A snack of some sort.
After I’ve been sitting and writing for hours, I like to take mini breaks which involve eating. The snack is almost always never good for me. My favorite things are chocolate, ice cream, cake, or cashews.
5. A pen and paper.
I usually get other ideas when I write, so I keep this notebook (that I also take EVERYWHERE) with me and I jot down ideas. Sometimes I see something in the story that I want to fix later, so I’ll take a note of that kind of thing as well.
Those are the things I can’t live without! What are some things you can’t live without when you write or revise?

Yes! Flash drives are UBER important. I remember that happening to you, so now I save everything in at least 2 different places. So glad you didn't let that mishap deter you from winning NaNo–woo hoo! 🙂

I definitely depend on a notebook when writing to jot down ideas. It just feels different from typing them down onto a text file. 🙂

I can't believe we forgot to add flash drives- so, so, so important! I lost one and was devastated that I didn't have the same material on another flash drive. So, like you I back up my stuff through e-mails and save them on all of my laptops (two- one for home, one for work and the netbook, too!). These are great items!

I'm glad I'm not the only one with the unhealthy snack addiction, I always have plates on my desk 😉

I lost my flash drive once. Since then, I email myself about once every 3 days.

I'd say: my notebook, Scrivener, Internet, music and dropbox. 🙂

I need music or some kind of background noise too. On first drafts I generally use a composition book and pencils. I dislike writing in pen.
