Hello all! How was the weekend? Mine was busy, which was something I wasn’t anticipating. Things that I need to do or places I needed to be kept popping up. April, by far, has been the busiest month for me. Anyway, I’m praying to find some time this week to edit, write and submit my work. I hope you will take the time to get your work out there. I haven’t been the best role model in the submission department lately, but do as I say, not as I do! The beauty about submitting is that you can always begin again. You can stop and start however many times you want and at any given time. Go ahead, get in gear.
Contests:
1. Winged City Poetry Chapbook Contest
One author will receive $100 and 25 copies in lieu of royalties for the best poetry chapbook. Manuscripts need not be anonymous. Page limit is 24 pages max (single or 1.5 spaced) not including acknowledgments, title page, etc. Final book subject to editing. There is a reading fee of $10 and the contest deadline is July 1, 2013.

2. First Novel Contest: Emerging Writers Getaway Contest of the Whidbey Writers MFA Alumni Association
Grand prize: a seven-day retreat at a cabin in the North Carolina Smokies (valued at $2,000), plus a cash award of $300. Second and third place receive cash prizes. Entry fee is $25. Submissions (synopsis, first 25 pages) will be accepted through May 24, 2013.

1. Revolution House Magazine
The editors of Revolution House Magazine are currently reading submissions of poetry, non-fiction, short stories, flash fiction, and graphic stories for issue 3.1, due to be released late spring/early summer 2013. They are particularly in the market for short fiction, long fiction, fiction of all stripes, weirder fiction, realistic fiction, and fiction that moves the reader in some way.

2. Mantis
Mantis: A Journal of Poetry, Criticism, and Translation is looking for original poetry, translations, and criticism for its twelfth issue. An annual publication, Mantis is housed at the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages at Stanford University. In poetry, they’re interested in work from across a range of aesthetics, subject matters, and locales. They value evocative imagery, a well-tuned ear, and an engagement with a poem’s shape or form. In translation they’re keen to expose readers to compelling and unfamiliar work. They tend to choose translations by contemporary poets.

3. Balaustine Anthology
Balaustine is a forthcoming anthology of writing about wanting family. They are looking for poems, short stories, and essays around the topics of wanting children, being unable to have children, miscarriage and loss, infertility, adoption, and other “alternative” families. Above all they are looking for honesty, beautiful writing, and great stories. Send no more than 3-5 poems, one story or essay in the body of an email along with your name and e-mail address to balaustineanthology@gmail.com with the subject header: Submission.
