   Hello all! Guess what? I’m teaching my first fiction class today! I have students! I’m really excited and nervous at the same time. Having my own fiction class is something I’ve wanted for a long time and it’s finally happening.    I haven’t asked this question in a long time, so have you all been submitting? It’s a new month, which  means it’s time to sit down and plan out your submissions or at least pick one place to submit to. It may take a lot of no’s to finally get one yes, but believe me, that one little yes, will feel like such a huge accomplishment in your writing career. Take the leaps, be strong and get your work out there.

Contests:

1. Naugatuck River Review’s 4th Annual Narrative Poetry Contest

Naugatuck River Review is dedicated to publishing narrative poetry in the tradition of great narrative poets such as Gerald Stern, Philip Levine or James Wright. They are open to many styles of poetry and looking for narrative poems that sing, which means the poem has a strong emotional core and the narrative is compressed. First prize is $1000 and publication in NRR. Second prize is $250 and publication in NRR. Third prize is $100 and publication in NRR. All poems will be considered for publication. There is an entry fee of $20 per group of 3 poems. Deadline is September 1, 2012.

2. 2012 Barthelme Prize for Short Prose

Gulf Coast is now accepting entries for the 2012 Barthelme Prize for Short Prose, judged by Ander Monson. The contest is open to pieces of prose poetry, flash fiction, and micro-essays of 500 words or fewer. The contest awards its winner $1,000 and publication in the journal. Two honorable mentions will also appear in issue 25.2, due out in April 2013, and all entries will be considered for paid publication on the Gulf Coast website. Entry fee is $17 and the contests ends on September 1, 2012.

3. The 16th Annual Zoetrope: All Story Short Fiction Contest

Zoetrope: All Story accepts all genres of literary fiction. Entries must be: unpublished; strictly 5,000 words or less; and accompanied by a $20 entry fee per story. First prize is $1,000. Second prize is $500. Third prize is $250. The three prizewinners and seven honorable mentions will be considered for representation by William Morris Endeavor, ICM, Regal Literary, the Elaine Markson Literary Agency, Inkwell Management, Sterling Lord Literistic, Aitken Alexander Associates, Barer Literary, the Gernert Company, and the Georges Borchardt Literary Agency. The contest closes on October 1, 2012.

1. The Survivor’s Review

The Survivorʼs Review, a not-for-profit online journal encouraging the creative expression of cancer survivors, is seeking stories, essays, and poems by those who are intimately familiar with the cancer journey.

2. Burntdistrict

Burntdistrict is now accepting poetry submissions for their second issue, to be published late summer/early fall of 2012. Burntdistrict is a print journal produced by the editors of Spark Wheel Press.

3. Trio House Press

Trio House Press is open for submissions of full-length poetry manuscripts (48-70 pp.) during the open reading period, July 1-July 31. Poets whose manuscripts are selected must serve as Collective Members of Trio House Press for a period of twenty-four months. There is a reading fee of $20.

4. Worker’s Write Journal

Calling all Road Warriors: Issue nine of Workers Write, tentatively titled, Tales from the Concrete Highway, will contain stories and poems from the driver’s point of view. They’re looking for fiction from taxi cab drivers and chauffeurs, truck drivers, delivery drivers and couriers, forklift operators–anyone who uses a wheeled vehicle for work (even pit crews and stunt drivers). Submission deadline is December 21, 2012.

5. Aquarius Books

This reading period is only for writers who have not previously been published by Aquarius Press/Willow Books. The mission is to develop, publish and promote writers typically underrepresented in the market, and the reading period is open to all writers from diverse cultural backgrounds. Poetry manuscripts should be in the 48-96 page range, and fiction/nonfiction should be no longer than 180 pages.

6. The Conium Review
