   Hello all! How was the weekend? I’m sort of scrambling around this week. I’ve got a novel I’m editing for a client, plus I’m getting ready for a big trip! I say “big” because I get a full weekend to work on my novel and be among writers. I’m heading off to a writer’s retreat with some writer friends from Twitter, Blogger and some from my MFA program. I CANNOT wait. Today is also my sister’s birthday (If you’re reading this, Happy Birthday Nat!) and I have to go to work as normal this week. Then there’s always Black Fox. We’re nearing our release day. I’m swamped. I’m not complaining, though. I love being busy. I have only a few opportunities today, because of such a busy week, but fear not, I’ll be back next week with plenty more.

Contests:

1. The Southern Sin Essay Contest

Creative Nonfiction (CNF) and the Oxford Creative Nonfiction Writers Conference & Workshop are looking for essays that capture the South in all its steamy sinfulness–whether you’re skipping church to watch football, coveting your neighbor’s Real Housewife of Atlanta, or just drinking an unholy amount of sweet tea. Confess your own wrongdoings, gossip about your neighbor’s depravity, or tell about your personal connection to a famous Southerner headed down the broad road to Hell. Whether the sin you discuss is deadly or just something that would make your mama blush, describe it in an essay that is at least partially narrative. The selected essays will be published in Creative Nonfiction #47. CNF and Oxford will award $5000 for the best essay. Reading fee is $20 and the contest deadline is July 31, 2012.

2. Missouri Review Editor’s Prize

The Missouri Review will award $5,000 to the best piece in each of the following categories: fiction, poetry and essay. Entry fee is $20 and the contest closes on October 1, 2012.

Calls for Submissions:

1. Technoculture

Technoculture seeks creative works that use new media and/or are on the subject of technology, and essays from a broad a range of academic disciplines that focus on cultural studies of technology. For Volume 3 (2013), The Retro Issue, they are seeking essays and creative works that focus on lost, ancient, old or dead technologies, technologies that no one uses, or very few people still employ. Topics could include depictions of technologies that treat a wide range of subjects related to the humanities. Submission period will be between September 1, 2012 and August 31, 2013.

2. Prairie Wolf Press Review

The editors of Prairie Wolf Press Review, an online literary journal, are looking for short stories, flash fiction, essays, poetry, and visuals for the fall issue. Submission period closes September 1, 2012.
