Hello all! This is the last Monday in October–which leads me to my next point. Are you getting ready for National Writing Month? I feel as though I’ve been caught up in the whirlwind of life lately. I haven’t had as much time for writing and editing. I feel like NanoWriMo is designed especially for me. No matter what, I’m always selfish during the month of November. It’s my time to focus on my writing. Hopefully, I’ll elaborate on this more in my annual Nano Prep post. I’m praying I have time to write it this year. While you’re getting ready for NanoWriMo, maybe you could test the waters with a short story. Write it, then submit it. Two more days of freedom!
Contests:
1. Short Story Contest: Bethlehem Writers Roundtable Short Story Award
Submissions of short fiction or memoir (2000 words or fewer) on the theme of “Winter’s Tale” or “Spring Story” are now being accepted for the Bethlehem Writers Roundtable Short Story Award. In addition to a $200 prize, the first place winner’s story will be considered for print publication in the Bethlehem Writers Group’s upcoming anthology. Second place will receive $100 and publication in the BWG Writers Roundtable on-line literary magazine. Third place will receive $50 and publication in the BWG Writers Roundtable on-line literary magazine. Honorable Mentions may also be published in the BWG Writers Roundtable on-line literary magazine during a month selected by the editors. Contest deadline is January 15, 2013.
2. Third Coast Magazine Fiction & Poetry Contests
Third Coast Magazine is currently accepting submissions for the 2013 Third Coast Fiction & Poetry Contests. Winners in each genre receive $1000 and publication. All entrants receive a one year subscription to Third Coast. Submit one previously unpublished story of up to 9,000 words or three previously unpublished poems and a $16 entry fee. Contest deadline is January 15, 2013.
3. Broad River Review
Broad River Review invites submissions to the 2012 Rash Awards in Fiction and Poetry. They will award $500 to the winner of each contest, as well as publication in the next volume of Broad River Review, which will appear in Spring 2013. Finalists will also be considered for publication. Entry fee is $15 and the contest closes on November 15, 2013.
Calls for Submissions:
1. South Loop Review
South Loop Review publishes essays and memoir, lyric and experimental forms, non-linear narratives, blended genre, photography and art. They’re looking for personal essays and memoir with fresh voices and new takes on presentation and form. Established and emerging authors are welcomed. Submission period closes January 1, 2013.
2. Bodega
Bodega, a new online magazine of literary work, is open for submissions. They publish monthly, and are looking to feature a selection of emerging and established writers. They’re enthusiastic about reading work from within the MFA community. They are currently accepting submissions of poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction.
4. Orange Quarterly
Orange Quarterly is pleased to announce that they’re now accepting submissions for the next theme issue: Time. Volume III, No. 1, will be published Winter 2013. They’re looking to publish creative work (fiction, poetry, non-fiction, art and photography) inspired by, informed by, or otherwise relating to time. Deadline is December 1, 2012.
