Hello all! How was the weekend? I have been having such a time. As my co-worker would say, “I’m busier than a one-armed paper hanger!” My introductions for the next few months will most likely be on the shorter side. I’m trying to keep up with everything so bear with me.
I’ve decided to add another weekly post to my blog. Every Friday I’ll also post writing prompts. It may be a phrase, a picture or a list of words you should use in a story. I’ve been getting a lot of feedback on my opportunities post. Apparently, people have actually been published by magazines I’ve included. I cannot even begin to tell you how AWESOME that makes me feel! I’d also like to help the ones that need a little push to write. So Fridays, we write!
Contests:
1. Wild Violet Fiction and Poetry Contests
Wild Violet is accepting submissions for its annual Fiction and Poetry Contests. First place winners in each contest receive $100 and publication; second and third place winners receive publication. Submission fee is $5 per poem or story and the contest deadline is November 16, 2012.
2. America’s Next Author
America’s Next Author, the first social writing contest, is now open for contest entries. America’s Next Author is a huge writing contest with a $5000 grand prize. In addition to the cash, the winning author will receive support in publication. Two other prizes of $500 each will be given to two other entries. The contest is built around a very unique concept: all contest entries will be visible to the public and the winner will be chosen by voters and a panel of judges. Nomination rounds begin October 9, 2012. Finalists will be announced December 4, 2012. Winners will be announced December 18, 2012.
Calls for Submissions:
1. Inch Magazine
Inch is a quarterly magazine devoted to tiny poems and tiny fiction. They believe that good things come in small packages, and focus on poems of one to nine lines, or fiction of 750 words or fewer. The Fall 2012 issue will be dedicated to short memoir. Submit by November 1, 2012.
2. The Helix
The Helix, Central Connecticut State University’s acclaimed literary journal, is looking for new work for its Fall 2012 issue. Submit poems, prose or artwork.
3. The Atlas Review
The Atlas Review is a new literary magazine comprising poetry, fiction, essays, and art, slated to print twice a year. Thy are currently accepting work for Issue #1 until November 15th.
4. Lunch Ticket
Antioch University Los Angeles creative writing MFA program’s biannual publication, Lunch Ticket is accepting submissions for its second issue. They are currently accepting fiction and poetry, and are especially looking for creative non-fiction, writing for young people and visual arts submissions.
5. 580 Split
580 Split, the graduate literary journal housed at Mills College in Oakland, California, is seeking submissions for its 15th issue. The theme is Obsession. They welcome exemplary works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and visual art. Experimental work, international writers, and marginalized perspectives are highly encouraged. Submissions will be accepted through October 28, 2012.
6. The Nassau Review
The Nassau Review, Nassau Community College’s international literary journal, is now accepting submissions. The theme for the submission period of 2012-2013 is Ekphrasis. Ekphrasis means any work about, influenced by, or containing allusions to any other type of art or literature. The subject or allusions can be about anything in the artistic and creative world: dance, drama, literature, music, painting, photography, sculpture. All writing submissions during this period are automatically considered for the Writer Awards: $250 for poetry and $250 for prose. The submission period will end on December 20, 2012.
